I just recently came back from a 5-day cruise to Bermuda on Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas and was both surprised and slightly disappointed with the wayfinding system used on the ship. The ship, like almost all other large cruise vessels, is large and often confusing to navigate. I personally found the wayfinding system to be inadequate, especially for the younger and older passengers. That being said, I’m going to be taking a look at what Royal Caribbean did right and what they did wrong.

First, let’s take a look at something that they got right.

These are centered in the main elevator area on every deck. They’re recognizable, easy to find, and they’re a great way to find out where you are and where you need to go.

Here’s another element of the system that works. These numbers are big, clear, and greet you both when you get off the elevators and when you go down a flight of stairs.

—

Now, onto some stuff that (I think) could have had better treatment.

This is one of the signs used to direct visitors to the rooms. This is placed on the wall directly to the left of the small passageway to the stateroom area. Notice that the arrow points up. This seems silly to me. I feel that grouping the stateroom numbers in order of direction, then assigning an arrow to each group, would have been a clearer and more effective treatment for these signs. The sign, in my opinion, is big enough to accommodate this.

This is a sign used to direct guests to the restrooms. The use of symbols here is good, but the choice of arrows does not feel appropriate. I might just have a strange aversion to that arrow, but when I look at it I tend to see a 90º angle with a line. An arrow pointing directly downwards, I feel, would have been a better choice.

These are just a few of the issues that I found. The other large issue is the insufficient quantity of signs present throughout the ship.

In part 2 of this article I will be showing some of my own solutions to these problems.

Designing for Myself

I’m not sure why this is, but I find it extremely difficult to design things for myself that I’m happy with. More often than not, I’ll have an idea for a great business card or website design for myself, only to get about halfway into designing it and then getting bored/frustrated/whatever with it. The issue is not that I don’t know how to design, it’s that I don’t know how to design for myself. Why is this? I should know my tastes and likes/dislikes better than anyone, yet I can’t seem to get the designs right when I’m working on my personal stuff. I’ve been thinking about it, and I think I know why. I have a terrible tendency to look at the work of others and try to make my work as good or better as theirs. Now, this might not seem like a bad thing, but in my case it is. I want to be good – no, great – but I have to realize that the people I’m comparing myself to are industry professionals, people with years upon years of real-world design experience. I don’t have that yet. I’ve come to realize that sometimes I just need to take a step back and worry about only what I’m doing. This may sound like common sense, I know, and I’ve always know it somehow. It just took me a while to figure it out.
